In April of 2024 I decided I wanted to start learning about roasting coffee. I started by getting the lay of the land of the entry level coffee roasters out there. But with a minimum buy in of about $500+, I didn’t want to spend that kind of money on a roaster, not knowing if I would stay interested enough to rationalize the hefty price tag, as I tend to have the habit of dropping an interest after a couple weeks of intense fixation. Then I discovered the endless number of DIY home roaster designs out there. Looking at Larry Cotton and others’ designs floating around the internet I was inspired. I thought “I’m handy. I could probably do that!”

So I built a VERY basic flour sifter heat gun roaster. I whipped up a basic wooden stand with a hole cut in it, to house and position the flour sifter over the heat gun. Ordered some beans from Sweet Maria’s and I was roasting in no time.
